DAR A ENTENDER

Dar is one of those verbs with literally dozens of possible meanings and uses. Today we are going to see one of them. 

Dar a entender. The dictionary will tell you that this idiom means insinuate (insinuar). I think ‘lead to believe’ is a better translation. Or to make someone read between the lines. 

Ex. Cuando le preguntamos, María nos dio a entender que algo no iba bien en su trabajo. Pero no dijo nada concreto.

María gave us some clues that lead us to believe something was not ok with her job. But she was not clear about it. She just wanted us to read between the lines.
